PACER 20m Beep Test

A PACER test timer that runs the full 20-meter multi-stage fitness test — also called the beep test or bleep test — on a screen you can read from across the gym. Set two lines 20 meters apart and run from one to the other in time with each beep. The pace starts at a jog and quickens at every level, so the gap between beeps shrinks as you go; your score is the level and shuttle you reach before you can no longer make the line in time.

All 21 levels run back to back, just over twenty-two minutes if you complete them. Each level is a single beep per shuttle, and its color flips on every beep so the cadence is visible as well as audible; neighboring levels use distinct color pairs, so a level change is obvious at a glance. Open the preset in the editor to shorten it for a class, change the alert, or stop at the level you are training toward.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the PACER test?
A multi-stage fitness test run over a 20-meter course, also known as the beep test or bleep test. You run shuttles between two lines in time with a beep that gets faster each level, and keep going until you can no longer reach the line before the beep. It estimates aerobic fitness and is used in schools (as the FitnessGram PACER), sports, and military or police entry tests.
How long is the full 20m PACER test?
Completing all 21 levels takes just over 22 minutes. Very few people finish — most reach their limit well before the final levels, which is the point: the level and shuttle where you drop out is your result.
How is the PACER test scored?
By the last level and shuttle you complete in time — for example "Level 9, shuttle 5". This timer shows both on screen during each shuttle ("Level 9 - 5"), so note where you stop. Most scoring tables convert that to a predicted VO2 max.
Why does the color change on every beep?
Each shuttle flips between the level’s two colors so you can see the cadence advancing, not just hear it — useful on a muted screen or from a distance. A new level switches to a different color pair, so you can tell at a glance when the pace has stepped up.
